Germany's Nuclear Waste Nightmare - the Gorleben Salt Mines

Although Germany voted to abandon nuclear energy, there will still be the problem of nuclear waste for a very long time.  Some 126,000 barrels of nuclear waste have been dumped in the Asse II salt mine over the last 50 years.  The tunnels are falling into decay and risk collapse.  The people who live in the mine's region, the northern Harz mountain range, have grown edgy due to the salt mine's misuse as a nuclear waste repository.  They feel that they have been lied to and deceived. The federal Government has ordered the Federal Office for Radiation Protection to assess whether the radioactive waste in the Asse mine can be retrieved.  Experts warn that removal is more dangerous than leaving the barrels put.

Belgium: New Measures to Protect Children from Mobile Phones

Belgian Minister for Health, Laurette Onkelinx
UPDATE (27 October 2013):  By royal decree, as of 1 March 2014, mobile phones that are specially designed for young children may no longer be introduced to the Belgian market. This concerns customized mobile telephones suitable for children younger than 7 years of age, for instance having few buttons and a shape attractive for children. Additionally, from this date forward, no advertising may be made for mobile phone use among the same age group.

Details concerning new measures aimed at protecting children from mobile phones
RTBF, 25 February 2013 (translated from French)

Today, the majority of teenagers are hooked on mobile phones. The latest report of the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization (WHO) considers that its use is “possibly carcinogenic for humans” and that intensive use is dangerous. It did not need more for the Belgian authorities to react. There will be rules to follow.

The Ministers for Health and for Consumer Affairs are encouraging a better protection of young users. In order to limit use, there will be rules to follow which mainly concern sales and advertising.

There will no longer be advertising specifically targeting children younger than 14 years of age. Sellers will be obliged to inform their customers of the “specific absorption rate” of mobile phones, that is, the level of radiation of the device. The sale of mobile phones specifically designed for young children up to age 7 will be banned in Belgium.

French Lawmakers Bury Bill on Electromagnetic Emissions Risks

France's Digital Economy Minister,
Fleur Pellerin
French lawmakers bury bill on emissions risks
Telecom Paper, 4 February 2013

France's national assembly has sent back to committee with no debate a bill on the precautionary principle for electromagnetic emissions risks, effectively burying it for at least a year, reports 01net. Environmentalist deputies sought to apply by precaution rules such as banning the ues of Wi-Fi in kindergartens and schools, and limiting antenna strength to 1 V/m. Digital Economy minister Fleur Pellerin recently said that studies on the risks of emissions are contradictory and that irrational fears could not be allowed to block France's economic and technological development. The EELV group deputies said they felt "frustrated and disappointed" when some passages of the text were removed before the bill was returned to committee. They later blamed the Socialists for reneging on a campaign promise. Consumer organisations Priartem, Agir pour l'Environnement and Collectif des electrosensibles des France wrote an open letter to the prime minister to remind readers of the importance of the precautionary principle, citing asbestos.

Parent Groups Warn Against Wi-Fi Industry Posing as Consumer Watchdog

Source:  Parents for Safe Schools and SafeinSchool.Org

To School Boards and the public: A group of computer software personnel who serve the wireless industry posed itself as a consumer protection watchdog. This group called Bad Science Watch recently issued a report1 to attack concerned scientists and citizens who raise awareness about the well-documented health impacts2 of WiFi and wireless technology, especially on children.

The committee chair of this report, Gem Newman, is the lead developer at Invenia Technical Computing3. Invenia's customers are utility companies who are rolling out radiating wireless smart meters4. Committee member Adrian Powell is a software contractor. No one in this committee has any credentials regarding the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and human biology.

Just like the tobacco and asbestos industries have done in the past, this group diligently promotes the myth that there is no risk from WiFi radiation. They ignore all peer-reviewed scientific studies showing harm of microwave and electromagnetic fields on animals and humans, and ignore the calls for precaution by legitimate doctors associations5, the International Agency for Research on Cancer6, the European Parliament7, the Council of Europe8 as well as scientists around the world who conduct research on electromagnetic radiation.

Link Between Autism Spectrum Disorders and Electromagnetic Frequencies

Dr. Martha R. Herbert, pediatric neurologist and neuroscientist at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, has written a powerful letter on the link between autism spectrum disorders and electromagnetic frequencies and radiofrequency radiation such as that emitted by Wi-Fi to the Los Angeles Unified School District which is considering installing Wi-Fi in schools. Every parent, grandparent, teacher, school administrator, school board trustee and others working in the school system needs to read this letter.

Belgium: The Majority Refuse to Consider Hypersensitivity to Electromagnetic Radiation!

The fight for recognition of electro-hypersensitivity as a handicap and establishment of "white zones" for electro-hypersensitive persons in Belgium.

Press release from the Ecologist Members of the Belgian Parliament – 31 January 2013 (originally published on the site of Robin des Toits, translated into French by the editor of this blog)

An “Ecolo-Groen” resolution aimed at recognizing electro-hypersensitive patients was defeated Wednesday morning (30 Janaury 2013) in the Public Health Committee of the House. This resolution requested the Government principally to officially recognize the existence of this syndrome as an “illness” (maladie), as well as to recognize as a handicap the resulting functional maladjustments and disabilities.

The text equally requested Belgium to conduct and participate in scientific studies aimed to update the mechanisms of the causal link between exposure and symptoms, as well as to provide « white zones » in certain public areas, free of electromagnetic waves, in order to favor the access of persons suffering from electro-hypersensitivity to public, social and health services.

How Mobile Phones Affect Sleep

Cordless DECT phones and Wi-Fi, if kept switched on during the night, can also affect the quality of sleep, including that of the neighbors, in apartment buildings.

How Mobile Phones Affect Sleep (INFOGRAPHIC)
Huffington Post, 15 February 2013

Most people who own iPhones use them as their alarm clock — making it all too easy to check email one last time before falling asleep and hard to ever feel unplugged from work and social networks.

Several years ago my boss, Arianna Huffington, passed out from exhaustion after staying up late to catch up on work. She banged her head on the way down and ended up with five stitches — and became what she calls a "sleep evangelist." Now she leaves her phone charging in another room when she goes to bed and encourages friends to do the same.

Cancer Prevention Advocate Dr. Margaret Cuomo

This article about Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo is being posted because it is a good summary of her book on cancer in the United States and the need to change its “cancer culture” which currently focuses on early screening and treatment. We must move towards primary prevention, which includes identifying and limiting environmental risk factors. The article fails to mention that Dr. Cuomo includes reduction of cell phone use along with avoidance of BPA and other substances in her list of ways to protect against cancer.

My Lunch with Cancer Prevention Advocate Dr. Margaret Cuomo
by Gabe Canales, Blue Cross Foundation, Chron, 16 January 2013

In New York City this week I had more than lunch. I had food for thought from cancer-prevention advocate Dr. Margaret Cuomo, author of the provocative must-read A World Without Cancer. At the suggestion of Dr. Cuomo, we met at the acclaimed Michelin-starred Rouge Tomate, which serves delicious farm-to-table organic cuisine developed in consultation with an on-staff nutritionist.

For months I’d been looking forward to meeting Dr. Cuomo and exploring ways for my Blue Cure Foundation to support her, and for me to collaborate with her. I believe it’s imperative to share her incredibly valuable message that our government, medical community, patient advocates and other non profits must heed: that we must focus on preventing cancer before it even starts.

Testimony of Electrohypersensitivity: Velma, United Kingdom

Velma with her electro-sensor
Daily Mail article updated and reposted:

The United Kingdom lags far behind other countries in the world in recognizing the potentially harmful health effects of electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless technologies. Its Health Protection Agency acknowledges that the technology (mobile phones, antennas, Wi-Fi …) is basically safe, although it does warn about excessive use of mobile phones by children. The UK does not recognize the condition of electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) which is on the rise. The medical profession is not keeping up with diagnosis and treatment of health conditions caused by new technologies. In the face of not knowing where to turn for help, people resort to protective measures which are in fact are only short-term solutions. Dr. George Carlo, an expert in the field, calls this a “tragedy”. “[Protective measures] are simply survival mechanisms. The long-term solution is building the internal adaptive capacity that enables those with ES to be like the rest of us - living our lives without the encumbrance of awful ES-triggered symptoms.”  ElectroSensitivity UK is a support group for those who suffer from EHS.

Women and Children Are Far More Susceptible to the Ravages of Ionizing Radiation

“Reference Man” Risk Model Lambasted as Obsolete, Unscientific
Women & Children First! (to be Harmed by Radiation)

by John LaForge, counterpunch.org, 30 January 2013

“Women and children first” is redefined in the nuclear age, now that science has shown that they are far more susceptible to the ravages of radiation than men and boys.

The nuclear power and weapons industry, people living near reactors, practitioners of nuclear medicine and dentistry, and the nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed Navy and Air Force all have a vested interest in radiation protection. Likewise the irradiation industry that zaps food, spices, medical instruments and merchandise with Cobaolt-60, construction firms that use X-ray machines to check welds, smoke detector manufacturers that place Americium-241 inside each unit, and nuclear waste brokers, haulers and dumpers who come in close proximity to radiation every day.

Fast Food Diet Linked to Asthma and Eczema Severity in Children

Fast Food Diet Linked to Asthma and Eczema Severity in Kids, Large Study Finds
Science Daily, 16 January 2013

Eating three or more weekly servings of fast food is linked to the severity of allergic asthma, eczema, and rhinitis among children in the developed world, indicates a large international study published online in the respiratory journal Thorax.  [Click here for full Thorax study: http://bit.ly/Ub15lh.]

The authors base their findings on data from more than 319,000 13-14 year olds from 107 centres in 51 countries, and more than181,000 six to seven year olds from 64 centres in 31 countries.

All the participants were involved in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), which is a collaborative research project involving more than 100 countries and nearly two million children, making it the largest study of its kind.

Cell Phones: 50 Percent Increase in Frontal and Temporal Lobe Tumors in Children

As parents continue to thoughtlessly allow their young children to use cell phones, they would do well to stop for a moment to read this recent article in Natural News (by Lloyd Burrell, 30 May 2012). One in four of all registered child tumors in the United Kingdom is a spinal or brain tumor. The UK Department of Health believes that the 50% increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumors in children between 1999 and 2009 is a result of cell phone radiation.   Industry should "put out more user-friendly warning labels, implement the use of functions that place time restrictions on calls, and halt the aggressive marketing tactics aimed at children."

Cell phones: 50 percent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumors in children

The Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom discovered a 50 percent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumors in children during the ten year span covering 1999 to 2009. Was this a result of cell phone radiation?

The Department of Health in the UK would appear to think so. One in three children under the age of ten currently has a cellphone in their possession. The governmental agency put out the following statement: "Children should only use mobile phones for essential purposes and keep all calls short."

France's Love Affair with Nuclear Cools

France has 58 nuclear reactors.
Insight – France’s love affair with nuclear cools
by Muriel Boselli, Reuters, 29 November 2012

(Reuters) – For decades, the elite engineers turned out by Paris’s grand Corps des Mines academy were faithful followers of the pro-atomic creed that transformed their country into the most nuclear-reliant nation in the world.

But a new generation of Mines graduates is starting to question that policy. It is a change of mindset that could aid efforts by President Francois Hollande to cut reliance on nuclear power from 75 percent to 50 percent of the electricity mix by 2025.

“No one at the Corps des Mines questions the need for nuclear power in the energy mix, however the younger generation is more concerned about the environment and leaving room for other energy sources,” said Francois Bordes, a 40-year old Corps des Mines graduate who advises businesses on energy efficiency.
